On June 27, 2018, the Foundation for an Independent Tomorrow (FIT) received a phone call informing us that the United States Secretary of Labor, Alexander Acosta, would be stopping by for a tour of our facility. The entire staff was excited and could not wait to show Mr. Acosta the amazing work that FIT does.
As the hour drew closer and closer the energy of the staff became contagious. The front line staff was set to explain the program from start to finish. Once the facility tour was given by CEO and Founder, Janet Blumen, the staff gathered in a conference room and began outlining the Re-Entry Initiative program.
Karina kicked things off and explained the client orientation process and the FIT Job Readiness course was detailed by Instructor Tracy. Rosa and Alfonzo were able to shed light on the intensive case management and career coaching that clients receive throughout the duration of their program. Next up, Schuyler elaborated on the vocational trainings available and how employers are most concerned with industry-recognized credentials. FIT Job Developer, Conrad finished off the round-table by outlining the employer partnerships that FIT has been able to cultivate.
The staff concluded the conversation with a client success story, told in his own words. William started out as a FIT client and is now a member of the team. Mr. Acosta appeared very excited with our program, stating “You all are doing great work and I’m happy that you have received additional funding though the Department of Labor.”
The conference room fell silent as the staff attempted to process the information Mr. Secretary just gave. Finally, we figured out that FIT’s Re-Entry Initiative program had been awarded two additional grants through the Department of Labor one for adults AND another for young adults. What an amazing and surreal way for the team to find out. It’s a day that none of us will ever forget.
