On June 10, 2019, Foundation for an Independent Tomorrow (FIT) held its inaugural Young Adult Celebration of Achievement Program. FIT was awarded the Young Adult Re-Entry Project grant almost a year ago through the Department of Labor Employment and Training Administration. Since then, FIT has been hard at work with the young adults who come through our doors.
The Young Adult Program (YAP) focuses its efforts on those individuals who have had previous justice involvement and fall between the ages of 18 to 24. It provides participants with soft-skills through our Job Readiness course, funding for tuition to vocational training, mentoring, workforce support services and the opportunity to earn money while completing the various aspects of the program.
Through a partnership with Bank of America and NV Energy FIT has designed an incentivized aspect to the program which allows our young adult participants to earn money when the achieve program milestones. Each participant is given the chance to reach different “levels” (e.g. Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum) based upon milestones such as: perfect attendance, participating in a mock interview, enrolling in vocational training, obtaining employment, and retaining employment for 90 days. Each level represents a monetary amount that will be deposited into their Bank of America account.
Monday’s celebration was to honor the YAP participants who have been successful not only as FIT participants but also as individuals in their community. The ceremony started with welcoming words from FIT Program Director Jennifer Casey, who expressed her appreciation and pride for each of these individuals for their commitment and desire to do so well. Following her remarks, Al Welch, Bank of America Las Vegas Market President spoke to the participants. The young adults were then presented with awards for their achievements. After the awards, YAP case manager Michael D. Hollis shared a few words of encouragement to the young adults. At the end of the ceremony, refreshments were provided while everyone mingled.
YAP case manager Melia, expressed how wonderful it to see the difference of each of the young adults participants, compared to when they first came to FIT. From unmotivated and doubtful to confident and driven individuals ready to take on the world.
Thank you to Bank of America for being a partner with FIT, the FIT team, and the Young Adults who we celebrated! FIT is proud of all that you have accomplished, will accomplish and wish you the best!
